ProjectWriter Privacy

ProjectWriter stores as little about you as it can. This page says exactly what it keeps, why, and how to get rid of it.
What we store
- Your email address. Only to sign you in. There is no password, so we store no password.
- Your documents — if you chose storage hosted by us. If you chose Google Drive, your documents are in your Drive and we do not keep a copy.
- A record of each device you have set up: a public key, a name, which operating system, when it was enrolled and when it was last seen. The matching private key never leaves your machine, so nothing we store could impersonate your device.
- Project settings: the name, the language you write in, which storage you chose, and when it was created and last opened.
Google Drive
If you choose Google Drive for a project, this is exactly what happens.
- We request one permission:
drive.file. It lets an application see only the files it created itself, or that you explicitly opened with it. We cannot see anything else in your Drive — not your other documents, not your photos, not your folders. This is enforced by Google, not by our promise. - We store a Google refresh token, encrypted, so the website can open your project without sending you back to Google every time.
- We use it only to list, read and write the documents in that project.
- You can revoke it from your project page at any time. Doing so also revokes it at Google, so nothing of ours is left behind in your Google account.
ProjectWriter's use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We do not transfer Google user data to anyone else, do not use it for advertising, and do not use it to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models. No person at ProjectWriter reads your documents.
What we never do
- We do not sell or rent anything about you.
- We do not show advertising, anywhere.
- We do not scan the contents of your documents.
- We do not read your writing. If you ask for help with a specific problem, we will ask for your permission first and tell you what we looked at.
Who else is involved
- Cloudflare hosts the site and, if you chose our storage, your documents.
- Postmark sends your sign-in emails, and therefore handles your email address.
- Google, only if you chose Google Drive.
There is no analytics service, no advertising network and no third-party tracking on this site.
Keeping and deleting
- We do not delete your work for being old. A project you have not opened in two years is still there.
- Deleting a project that lives in our storage deletes it. If it lives in your Google Drive, we remove our record and revoke our access, and leave your files alone unless you ask us to delete them too.
- Deleting your account removes everything above.
Getting your writing out
You can download any project as a zip of Markdown files, at any time, from its project page. If you use the on-device program, you already have a complete copy on your own machine.
Your rights
If you are in the EU or UK, you have the right to see what we hold about you, correct it, take it elsewhere, and have it erased. The export and delete buttons cover most of this directly. For anything else, write to us.
